****

Clean Feed The history behind the names of these two pieces for improvising chamber group is too difficult to synthesize here; check the liners or google around, also to learn about the various evolutions of the very orchestra’s appellative. What’s transparent is that the opening period is dedicated to Masami Akita (aka Merzbow), though Fields and his companions decided to approach the task with the sagacious expertise of a qualified ensemble paying homage to a time-honored composer rather than a Japanese noise merchant. The outcome is a superb paradigm of how to carry out a joint improvisation, the timbres so consistently interconnected in different permutations and dynamics that giving privileges to “lead” designs and distinct ideas becomes a pointless exercise. Our friendly advice is to relinquish a bit of focus and abandoning yourselves to a compelling stream of beautifully emitted music, nurturing one’s yearning for density in a collective statement without losing grip on the poetic aspects of the diverse instrumental idioms. The first, and a sizeable chunk of the fourth movement of “Ozzo” are plain wonders, replete with fine games of call and response, tactful probing of quietness and recurring parallelisms between assorted groups (sax, accordion and strings in particular evidence, with Thomas Lehn’s synthesizer adding pinches of analogue salt and the flutists inserting small enigmas throughout). The rest is more directly reminiscent of the conductor’s style both in terms of composition and as a guitarist: minuscule cells and dissonant quirks succeed and involve, the interest maintained by the extreme unsettledness generated by the palette’s variety. With musicians of the caliber of Frank Gratkowski, Carl Ludwig Hübsch, Melvyn Poore, Angelika Sheridan and Georg Wissel among the many – everybody deserving a “well done” – this live recording (Cologne’s Loft, January 2009) is as impeccable as a pre-planned studio session.
Carlos Bica

It is quite rare to hear multi-reedist Ken Vandermark record or perform with a pianist, the reason being that, back in the day (the early 1990s), his brand of new Chicago jazz was presented much like the hardcore punk scene of the previous decade—out of the back of a van. Like Henry Rollins and Black Flag, Vandermark’s life was one of constant travel, setting up and breaking down, only to move on to the next show.

Needless to say, his nomadic lifestyle was not conducive to trucking a piano around.

One of the few exceptions to the piano rule has been Norwegian Håvard Wiik—one-third of the chamber jazz trio Free Fall with Vandermark and bassist Inbebrigt Håker Flaten and a guest on Vandermark 5′s The Horse Jumps and The Ship Is Gone (Not Two, 2010).

Wiik’s role in Side A, like that in his band Atomic, is to relieve Vandermark of his organizational role—order being a natural habit for a chordal instrument. With the saxophonist and drummer Chad Taylor, Wiik also shares in the songwriting, making A New Margin an invigorating take on the jazz trio.

Freed of the responsibility for song structure, Vandermark can focus on being a soloist. His tenor (and the occasional clarinet) tone is liberated, and sounds quite liberating. With Taylor’s drums chasing Wiik’s hammering piano for the first three minutes of “What Is Is,” the saxophonist marches in response to the call. He sings the songs on this record, balanced and supported by Wiik and Taylor.

This trio also stabilizes this music without a bassist. The dynamic Taylor, best known for his work with the various Chicago Underground bands and the Exploding Star Orchestra, provides a constant energy here, maintaining a noisily free sound on “Fold” or supporting the abstractions of “Arborization” and “Permanent Sleeve (Walking Hand).” The session mixes the outward avant with some swinging bop-centered swing, even delving into {{Phillip Glass}|-like territory on Wiik’s “The Kreuzberg Variations,” building upon a repeating structure, only to be destroyed by entropy—sweet, free jazz entropy.
Inner Landscape is the first solo release from Daniel Levin, a cellist whose work forcefully inhabits the territory between jazz and avant garde art music. The six improvisations collected here, recorded over the course of two sessions in 2009, represent a comprehensive description of the sonic landscape of the contemporary cello.

The six landscapes encompass a broad range of techniques and genre-crossing sounds, creating a complex atmosphere of mixed moods. Landscape 1, for instance, features sound clusters of dissonant tones along with abrupt phrasing and simultaneously struck and plucked notes. The third landscape creates an unstable tension through the judicious use of tritones – this is a landscape viewed from a precarious standpoint. A different kind of tension builds in Landscape 4, with its brusque chords, strings struck with the wood of the bow, and rapid tremolo. Closing out the recording, Landscape 6 moves in and out of a kind of frantic falsetto voice as Levin swoops across the cello’s upper and lower registers.

Inner Landscape is a fine showcase for Levin’s technical and emotional versatility and an important document of adventurous solo string improvisation.
